LinuxAlt 2013 - video recordings and slides

Similarly to the previous year, we processed video recordings and slides taken during LinuxAlt 2013. This conference is held annually since 2006 and consists of lectures oriented not only on Linux and other open operating systems and technologies.

The conference is being prepared by group Linux v Brně – Brno representation of Liberix o.p.s., in cooperation with Faculty of Information Technology in Brno, company Red Hat Czech and other partners.

The conference aims to raise awareness about Linux, inform about its options and use at home, as well as in business and schools.

SIGdial 2013 - video recordings and slides

The 14th annual SIGdial Meeting on Discourse and Dialogue was held on Aug 22-24, 2013 in Metz, France. The SIGDIAL venue provides a regular forum for the presentation of cutting edge research in discourse and dialogue to both academic and industry researchers. Continuing with a series of thirteen successful previous meetings, this conference spans the research interest areas of discourse and dialogue. The conference is sponsored by the SIGDIAL organization, which serves as the Special Interest Group in discourse and dialogue for both ACL and ISCA.

GUADEC 2013 - The GNOME conference

GUADEC is the annual conference of the GNOME community, held in Europe since 2000. GUADEC 2013 was held in Brno, Czech Republic, a city which has played host to several other successful GNOME-related hackfests in the past. Subscribe to Our Audience Overview Report

We are thrilled to announce a release of our audience overview report. Anybody can now subscribe to receive weekly stats information for the whole event or a particular video recording. The subscription can be done using the Sign up form on the the information tab in our player (see the image below) or by clicking the Stats email subscription button on our stats pages.

After filling out the form with your email address, you will be sent a message with the activation link. You can sing up for receiving stats information from as many recordings as you like. You can also manage all your subscriptions and easily unsubscribe from those you are not interested in anymore. An email with stats information is sent every week with stats collected during the previous Monday-Sunday period. If there was no view during that period, the email is not sent.

• Views - the number of video views with a reasonable playback time
• Well-Replayed - the playback time as a fraction of the video length (1 = playback of the whole video)

We also provide you with a percentage ratio showing the progress since the previous week. We hope you will like and use our new feature. 

Our pitch at 120 Seconds for Innovative Companies

Igor Szoke took part in the 120 seconds for Innovative Companies event. This is a special networking event that helps to stimulate new co-operations between innovative companies. What is the length of a continuously replayed part of video?

As we mentioned in our previous post, we filter out continuously replayed segments (views) shorter than a magic length. So let us talk a bit about this magic length.

We are monitoring which part of video is being played. Each time you seek in video, click on a slide or follow a search result, you start to replay a new segment of video.

Now, please take a look at the following figure:

As you can see, there are 4 segments. First, the user started to watch the video from the beginning. After a while, he found it probably boring, so he jumped a little bit further. Then, he went through slides and found one interesting slide, so he clicked on it and jumped into the last quarter of the video. Finally, an interesting keyword came to his mind, so he searched for it and found an occurrence of the keyword in this video. He jumped to that part of the video where the keyword was spoken and watched for a while.

We monitor such events. When we sum up all segments and plot a histogram out of them, we get a graph like the following one:

SuperLectures gets detailed video stats

After a month of development, we release playback and traffic statistics that SuperLectures.com is continuously collecting. Unlike common video servers (YouTube, Vimeo), SuperLectures.com provides you with detailed video statistics (similarly to Wistia). SuperLectures.com reveals how much users get engaged while watching video recordings.

Before we start describing numbers and charts, we would like to get you acquainted with events we are monitoring. Our aim was to build a system collecting information about every important action that users perform while using SuperLectures.com. These are events like when users start/stop watching the video, seek to a different time, replay a video part, click on a slide/link and many others. Having acquired a substantial amount of data, we have decided to build stats pages showing how users watch any video. To display nice interactive charts, we used very powerful Google Charts Tools.
